Sixth Form Students at St Mary’s Catholic Academy Sixth Form were once again beaming broadly. A Level results day brought a record equalling 98% pass rate for A Level students with 63% of students achieving the highest grades of A*/A or Distinction*/Distinction in their results, and over a fifth, 22% of the overall grades at A*/A. 100% of students achieved 2 A Levels or equivalent passes with a remarkable 96% of students achieving 3 A Level or equivalent passes.
A group of eight high flying students achieved 30 A*/A grades between them . Jan Mieszczak (Chemistry - A, Physics – A, Maths – A*, Further Maths – A*, EPQ – A*, Polish – A) will attend Christ College, Cambridge to study physical and natural sciences, Luke Lavery (Politics - A, Biology – A, Chemistry – A, Maths – A) will attend UCL to study law, Charlie Rogers – Smith (Maths - A*, Further Maths – A*, EPQ – A, Physics – A, Chemistry – A) will attend St Andrews to study Maths, Ghassan Al-Idari (Biology - A, Chemistry – A, Maths – A, Politics – B) is going to study medicine at the University of Hull, Niamh Ronson – Spanish A*, English Lit – A, RS – A, EPQ – A*) will study modern languages and business at Newcastle University, Katie Geddes (English Lit – A, Politics – B, RS – A, Gen Studs – A*, EPQ – A*) will study English Literature at Lancaster University, Sam Green (Business – Distinction*, ICT – Distinction *, PE – Distinction*) will study Business Studies at Liverpool or an apprenticeship with the civil service, Rory Anderson (Business – Distinction*, Politics – B, English Lit – A, is taking a year out before attending university.
Students were keen to pass on their thanks to St Mary’s staff and to praise the Sixth Form at the Academy. Jan said, “I feel positively shocked and very pleased with the results which are the yield of all the hard work throughout the years. I chose St Mary’s because of the sense of community and the great level of support I received throughout High School.” Katie added “I couldn’t have imagined going anywhere else. St Mary’s is really friendly, inclusive and the one to one support is great.” A delighted Charlie echoed these thoughts, “I chose St Mary’s because of the easy transition from GCSE, because of the great teachers and because they really care.” Niamh added, “I am over the moon, St Mary’s is a close community atmosphere with friendly and supportive staff.”
Head teacher Mr Simon Eccles was incredibly pleased for the Academy’s students stating: “I am extremely proud of the achievements of our Sixth Form students who have worked so hard to prepare for their examinations and are seeing the fruits of their labours today with an excellent set of results. I would like to thank the staff at St Mary’s who supported the students every step of the way, whether through providing innovative, high quality lessons or in supporting students on their learning journey; I would also like to thank parents who have helped and supported the students and the Academy over the years their children have attended. I wish our students every luck in their chose courses and careers.”
Year 12 students were also celebrating today having laid foundations for future A Level success with another excellent set of results. 72% of students achieved a higher A-C grade in their results with 18 subjects guiding students to higher A/B grades.
Head of Sixth Form, Mrs Jennifer Burrough explained how success was achieved: “St Mary’s Sixth Form is a close family where our clear support system ensures students receive the targeted help they require. Our Catholic caring ethos and pride in all of our students is what makes our Sixth form unique.”
