Vertical Challenge

ImageA group of Year 9 pupils attended 'Vertical Challenge' an event held at Blackpool Pleasure Beach on Mon 10th Oct as part of National Construction Week.

The event was run by SETPOINT Lancashire in conjunction with the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), and required pupils to design and build a model roller coaster and design a poster to publicise it. The teams' efforts were judged by  representatives from SETPOINT  and the CITB. They were judging the pupils on their ability to work as a team as well as demonstrate design, practical and artistic skills plus the magical X factor!  The pupils also got the chance to learn about careers in Construction and Engineering and, as an end of day reward, they enjoyed a free ride on the Pepsi Max Big One.

Image Excited Year 11 students arrived at St. Mary’s this morning to discover that they had set a new record high for 5+A*-C.  Provisional results show a huge increase, from recent years, to a record breaking 58% gaining 5+A*-C.  The previous best set in Summer 2001 was 53% attaining 5+A*-C.  A staggering fifteen of the College’s most able and talented students achieved eight or more grade A*/As in their GCSEs.  Female students at the College have achieved highly and outperformed their male colleagues this year.  This is in contrast to the usual trend of girls’ underperformance in Blackpool.

The "A" Graders

Image Nervous Sixth Form students received their A-level results today at St. Mary’s Catholic College.  Amongst the many individual successes the results of Alex Baugh, Sam Lavin and Gary Mannion stood out – all received straight “A” grades in their three main subjects.  Alex achieved his straight “A” grades in English Literature, History and Politics and has been rewarded with a place at St. Hugh’s College, Oxford to read English.  Sam’s “A” grades were in Business Studies, French and Maths and she is looking forward to reading Business with French at Bath University.  Gary’s top grades in Business Studies, English Literature and Politics will ensure his place at Aston University, Birmingham to read Business Management.  In addition they also obtained A-levels in General Studies or Critical Thinking.
