Year 9 Enterprise Challenge

Year 9 Enterprise Challenge

On the 7th February, eight of our year 9 students took part in the BAE Systems Make It Enterprise challenge. The Manufacturing Institute’s Make It campaign is a programme of education-business linked activities designed to support the curriculum and to create partnerships between schools and manufacturing partners.

The Make It Enterprise Challenges are one-day events held across the North West, which are supported by a host of business partners including BAE Systems.

We attended the event at Ribby Hall and our team set up their own manufacturing business in a competition to create a new product. They were judged on their understanding of the design brief, the successful completion of key tasks; including everything from prototype design to marketing and their enterprise skills. The team pitched their product in a "Dragon's Den" style finale, where they were grilled by four 'Dragons' from BAE. It was a great experience for everyone involved!

Well done to Harry Shaw, Lexie Moat, Graceil Tinoy, Jess Hill, Joe Kirk, Christian Johnstone, Tasha Lees and Callum Sankey.

Anne Frank Exhibition

Anne Frank Exhibition
As part of St. Mary’s commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January), over 800 students viewed the Anne Frank Exhibition which was in school during the last two weeks. Eighteen Anne Frank Ambassadors were chosen from Year 8 to lead the tours, and they did a wonderful job of telling the heartbreaking story of Anne Frank in a professional and considerate manner. They are pictured here at the end of the exhibition.

St. Mary’s also organised the Blackpool Schools’ Holocaust Memorial Service which took place at St. Annes Synagogue on 27 January.

Hannah will be visiting Ethiopia

I’m Hannah and I’m preparing to travel to Ethiopia in a weeks time. I will be visiting HIV AIDS , climate change and livelihood projects, meeting students and street children. I may also (hopefully) have the chance to get involved with traditional music and art classes!

I’m so thrilled to have spent my first term at St. Mary’s gathering the skills and confidence needed to go overseas and hopefully make a difference to the lives of the people I meet.

Thanks so much everyone for your continued support and be prepared for me to ask to visit some classes on my return!

James will be visiting Cambodia

On the 25th January to the 12th of February I will be visiting projects including:

  • Sre Khmer a Cambodian agricultural Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to supporting sustainable socio-economic development.
  • Village Support Group an NGO in Battambang supporting those affected by the Khmer Rouge civil war.

I will be sharing messages from parishes in England, which are being sent to Cambodia through CAFOD’s Cambodian Connect2 programme. I look forward to sharing the important human stories of CAFOD’s work with everyone here at St Mary’s on my return and inspiring others!
