Course Description

In English Language, students are encouraged to become critical readers of a range of texts, and fluent, accurate writers, choosing content and adapting style and language to a wide range of forms. Students are also challenged to select and adapt speech to different situations and audiences. Students will continue to improve the skills which have been developed during their KS3 studies. The course is split into two areas: Reading literary and non-fiction texts, and writing. There is also an element of Spoken Language in which students are assessed on their ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Students will be awarded a separate qualification certificate for this.

Future Opportunities

Following a GCSE English Language course will prepare learners to make informed decisions and use language to participate effectively in society and employment. Good qualifications in English are valuable for all employment options, Sixth Form entry requirements are essential for AS/A Level English courses. Degrees in English often incorporate many areas of study such as Communications, Media, Visual Arts, Journalism, Teaching, PR/Marketing, Speech Therapy and Business and open doorways to numerous career paths.
